The Mystery of Katrina Why
God Judged New Orleans
By Norm Franz
Compiled September 11-28, 2005
When you live in the mile-high city of Denver, Colorado as I do, reports of hurricanes hitting America’s Eastern seaboard and Gulf coast do not warrant much personal concern. As a result, I generally offer up a short prayer of protection and then go about my day. However, when I saw Katrina grow to a Category 5 (C5)1 hurricane and head for New Orleans, I knew in the Spirit that heaven was going to say something very specific through this storm.
As I watched this disaster unfold, I began to ask the Lord for a clear understanding of Katrina’s message. I listened to numerous commentators explain Katrina
from every scientific and meteorological angle possible, without one of them putting it all together. And the best that the mainline religious community could come up with is that storms like Katrina were a mystery that we may never understand. However, on September 11th (the fourth anniversary of 9/11), God’s prophetic word began revealing to me the mystery of Katrina.
|
Since the LORD started speaking to me about this
apocalyptic event, I have spent much time in prayer and study, all of which is
contained in this special prophetic teaching. I believe God has released me to give this teaching
to Judeo-Christian America as a “prophetic word” and formal call to repentance.
It is doctrinally sound and charged with the “spirit of prophecy” that serves as
a light to unlock the specifics
of this mystery and explain 1) why God allowed a judgment to come on New
Orleans, 2) why He used Katrina, and 3) why
He did it on August 29, 2005.
"And so we have the prophetic word made more sure, to which you do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star arises in your hearts." (2 Peter 1:19)2
The Mystery of Judgments
The key to unlocking this mystery lies in understanding the different types of judgments, and what they are designed to accomplish.3 Some are positive and some are negative, and some are temporary and some are forever. But all in all, judgments fall into two primary categories as follows.
God’s Judgment (singular) is generally a reference to the "Day of His Wrath" (Psalms 110:5), which is the final judgment when Jesus pours out the bowls/vials of His wrath on all the unrepentant. This judgment culminates with His physical return accompanied by the saints at the battle of Armageddon (Revelation 16 and 19).
In some cases, a "wrath judgment" can also come as a judgment unto death that completely destroys an unrepentant city like in the judgment of Sodom and Gomorrah. In this case, God’s intent is that the city never be rebuilt or inhabited again. Although the final wrath judgment on the world is not coming anytime in the immediate future, wrath judgments on individuals and geographic areas/cities will come before the "Day of Wrath".
God’s Judgments (plural) are much broader in their purpose and they are not always bad. Yahweh5 speaks clearly about His judgments in the Torah5 which is the foundation of all wisdom (Deuteronomy 4:5-8). His commandment concerning our relationship to His judgments is clear and unambiguous:
"You shall thus observe My statutes, and keep My judgments, so as to carry them out, that you may live securely on the land." (Leviticus 25:18 NAS; also
Deuteronomy 4:12-14)
In order to keep and carry out God’s judgments, we have to understand what they are. The first step in doing this is to look at the etymology of the Hebrew word for "judgment". That word is "mishpat" which means: "a verdict (favorable or unfavorable) pronounced judicially". It comes
from the root word "shaphat" which means: "to judge, i.e. pronounce sentence (for or against); by extension, to govern."
6
It is important to note that God’s judgments are not just negative. They are both favorable and unfavorable, which is why King David treasured God’s judgments:
"The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring forever; the judgments of the LORD are true; they are righteous altogether. They are more desirable than gold, yes, than much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and the drippings of the honeycomb. Moreover, by them Thy servant is warned; in keeping them there is great reward." (Psalms 19:9-11)
The first principle we see here is that God’s judgments are "true" and "righteous". There is no judgment, good or bad, that is undeserved. If there were, then Yahweh could not be the just and righteous God that He is (Revelation 16:7). The second principle is that "by them Thy servant is warned" which ties into Hurricane Katrina and the warning it brought to New Orleans, America, and the world.
The premise behind these judgments is that man creates favorable or unfavorable judgments (blessings or cursings) based on his obedience or disobedience to God’s Commandments (Deuteronomy. 28). God then releases those judgments back on us as a way of governing our lives. The blessings confirm that our walk is righteous before Him and our fellow man. However, the cursings are sent as corrective judgments that warn us to repent
from our sin7 and turn back to righteousness:
"Have you not done this to yourself, by your forsaking the LORD your God, when He led you in the way? …Your own wickedness will correct you, and your apostasies will reprove you…" (Jeremiah 2:17-19)
"For when the earth experiences Thy judgments the inhabitants of the world learn righteousness." (Isaiah 26:9)
This process began in the Garden of Eden when Adam and Eve decided to live under the "law of sin and death" rather than in obedience to the "Law of Life in God (Christ Jesus)". Their transgression not only released the curse of death on mankind, but it corrupted the entire creation. The reality is that there were no natural disasters (earthquakes, tornados, hurricanes, etc.) on the earth before Adam sinned. Consequently, man’s sin is the source of all natural disasters.
Although Adam’s sin released the curse of death upon both man and nature, God’s restraining hand (the restrainer) kept the full stroke of physical death and destruction
from coming upon the entire creation. If God would have allowed the full penalty of Adam’s sin to be released, not only would mankind have been wiped out, but the earth would have been totally destroyed in a cosmic display of natural disasters. Consequently, the amount of the curse/judgment that was released on mankind was governed by God in order to accomplish His purpose. In other words, Yahweh is the ultimate "Governator."
In the case of Ananias and Sapphira, God simply released the full stroke of physical death upon them when they conspired to lie to the Holy Spirit. God used the unfavorable curse/judgment as a testimony against their sin and as a tool to govern the church. As a result, the fear of the Lord8 brought repentance which released God’s blessings in the form of signs, wonders, and unity in the church (Acts 5:11-12).
I want to reiterate that God does not create natural disasters. They are created by man when he transgresses God’s Law. Yahweh simply governs the timing, the intensity, and the direction of their release as judgments on sin:
"Out of the south comes the storm, and out of the north the cold… Also with moisture He loads the thick cloud; He disperses the cloud of His lightning. And it changes direction, turning around by His guidance, that it may do whatever He commands it on the face of the inhabited earth. Whether for correction, or for His world, or for lovingkindness, He causes it to happen." (Job 37:9-13)
Neither is God in the habit of just arbitrarily sending curses/judgments against people, cities, or nations unless they are warranted:
"Curses cannot hurt you unless you deserve them. They are like birds that fly by and never light." (Proverbs 26:2 TEV)
Consequently, the judgment of New Orleans did not come from God’s hand, but the removal of God’s hand. This released the curse/judgment of sin back upon an unrepentant city in the form of a hurricane named Katrina.
Why New Orleans?
First let me say that New Orleans has generations of wonderful and godly believers who have congregated around the saving grace of Jesus the Messiah. Their churches and outreaches have touched many lives with the message of the Gospel to the glory of God. They are truly the wheat among the tares that will be part of God’s great end time harvest (Matthew 13:24-30, 36-43;
Revelation 14:14-20).
Unfortunately, New Orleans has been completely overrun with tares. These tares have transformed this community into a "sin city" that makes Las Vegas look good-natured by comparison. It has one of the highest murder rates in America (ten times the national average)9 and is well known for its corrupt city government (third worst in America by population).10 Gambling, prostitution, robbery and all the other amenities that accompany the "spirit of lawlessness"11 are also extremely high in this city. Only by going back to the city’s spiritual roots do we discover the foundations of this lawlessness.
Pagan Carnivals have been a major foundation stone of New Orleans
from its very beginning. These pagan feasts are more than celebrations of fleshly lust and sensuality. They are spiritual expressions of the internal lawlessness that consumes men’s hearts. In its description of "Carnival", The New Orleans Voodoo Temple says:
"Carnival is usually only thought of in terms of external events and happenings. But the most important of events are internal. Carnival and The Mardi Gras are both external and internal events. Carnival, to be most effective, must take place within the Self as well as on the streets. As the Flesh is pushed to its limits through the pleasures of the streets, so must the Self be stretched to its limits through a willed violation of its "I am THIS/ I am not THAT." Only then can the Flesh and the Self join together and burn brightly enough to produce the Ashes
from which Spirit will rise, renewed as the Phoenix.12
Mardi Gras is the most well known carnival of New Orleans, which The New Orleans Voodoo Temple goes on to describe as:
"Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday) is the high point of Carnival followed by the quiet of Ash Wednesday. It is good to remember that Carnival literally means ‘Farewell to Flesh’ (Carnis= LATIN: "flesh" and vale= LATIN: "farewell"). Carnival is a celebration of great excess. It is a time when the flesh and all of the material pleasures that it apprehends are set ablaze in the passion of the moment. The fat, so to speak, is in the fire and one is left with the ashes on Wednesday."
Here we see that Mardi Gras culminates with Ash Wednesday, which is simply a non-biblical pagan observance that ties into Catholicism; a fact that will become more pertinent as we move forward.
Southern Decadence is another New Orleans based carnival that promotes unbridled acts of homosexually and other sexual perversions during the Labor Day weekend. It attracts crowds of over 120,000 homosexuals which makes it one of the country’s largest "gay gatherings". The official Southern Decadence website describes it as "a six-day danceathon studded with drag (cross dressing) cabaret, DJ nights and a well-heeled parade through the French Quarter. Tens of thousands of gay men descend on the French Quarter for a non-stop Labor Day weekend blowout. This street party wears heels and accordingly teeters
from bar to bar around the hub of activity at St. Ann and Bourbon streets."
Unfortunately for these party goers, Yahweh explicitly condemns the celebration of cross dressing and homosexual activities:
"A woman shall not wear man's clothing, nor shall a man put on a woman's clothing; for whoever does these things is an abomination to the LORD your God." (Deuteronomy. 22:5)
"[A man] shall not lie with a male as one lies with a female; it is an abomination. (Leviticus 18:22; see also
Romans 1:18-27)
|
The fact that Katrina hit New Orleans just prior to the
"Southern Decadence" celebration was clearly a judgment and warning to repent.
Nevertheless, this group flaunted their sin in God’s face buy holding their
festival anyway. In addition, the city fathers have begun promoting next
year’s Mardi Gas celebration from the midst of the rubble of their own
judgment. Like the old saying goes, "There are none so blind, as those who would
not see."
The Bible refers to these unholy feasts/celebrations as a "table of demons" that God warns us to stay away
from (1 Corinthians 10:21). Unfortunately, as deplorable as these celebrations are, the cornerstone of New Orleans’ transgression goes even deeper.
New Orleans Voodoo
One of New Orleans’ most popular and visible forms of lawlessness is Voodoo, which has been openly practiced there since its beginning. This includes all forms of Voodoo;
from "Rada" Voodoo which is the commercialized nature worship type of Voodoo that all the tourist
traps promote, to "Secta Rouge" and "Zobop" Voodoo which enlists high powered demons of witchcraft, black magic, charms, potions, and deadly spells.13
Voodoo arrived with the slaves
from Africa and the French Caribbean in the late 1700’s. As the slaves were forced into the Catholic Church, they started to mix Voodoo with Catholic rites and icons. Voodoo became so popular in New Orleans that it developed its own brand of Voodoo called New Orleans Voodoo. This unholy mix of witchcraft and religion "has evolved over time
from a largely African tradition to one that has been influenced by virtually every culture that has lived in South Louisiana, most notably Native American mystical traditions and French and Spanish Catholicism."14 Consequently, New Orleans Voodoo "has become a major part of
the cities culture and way of life."15 Voodoo is so ingrained into the city’s culture that its Arena Football Team is called the New Orleans Voodoo (see logo).
|
Voodoo’s Power lies in ancient African Vodou/Vodun which is as dark as it gets. Vodunists believe in a Supreme Being called the "Gran Met" who made the world, but has since handed it over to the Danbhal-Wed which means "Grand Serpent".16 Notably, "before the days of slavery, Africans worshipped a large python called Danh-gbwe as an embodiment of the gods."17 Consequently, the word Voodoo is translated as "the snake under whose auspices gather all who share the faith."18
This Grand Serpent is also known as the "father" of the spirits. In ancient African Vodou, the spirits are referred to as "Simbi", which are also known in more modern terms as "Loas". Simbi/Loas is the collective name for a very diverse group of ancestral spirits, who come
from the Kikongo area of West Central Africa.19 "The Vodou culture site lists no less than 27 names for simbi, covering the nations of Rada, Petro and Kongo."20
Simbi simply means "water spirit" and each simbi has a specific relationship with water. For example, Simbi Dlo simply means "Simbi in Water" which is a primary source of power for all Voodoo potions and elixirs. Another simbi named Simbi Andezo, meaning "Simbi in Two Waters", has a connection to both fresh water and salt water.21 Michael Ortiz Hill is a Bantu tribal healer and Voodoo writer, who advocates that "there is considerable scholarship about the "cymbees" of the southern wetlands, water spirits both fierce and magical, who inhabit streams, swamps and ponds."22
In other words, the reason Voodoo is so powerful and widespread in the Louisiana
Bayou is that it draws its energy from Simbi Andezo, whose occult power is magnified at New Orleans, where the fresh water of the Mississippi River meets the salt water of the Gulf of Mexico. Selah!23
|
Voodoo high priests (houngan) and high priestesses (mombo) are the mediums that not only summon these spirits, but also "help them depart when his or her business is finished."24 These mediums of the macabre are actually prophets of a
"Jezebel spirit" who teach people to worship/eat at the table of Voodoo demons (Revelation 2:20). It must be noted that Jezebel is the most versatile "religious spirit" there is, because she can adapt to whatever the pagan culture wants in a religion. She can even give it a Christian flare which is why so many Catholic idols and rites are used in Voodoo worship today.
|
In His love and mercy toward mankind, Yahweh gives Jezebel and all her followers’ time to repent, but when that time is up, He releases a very harsh judgment:
"And I gave her [Jezebel] time to repent; and she does not want to repent of her immorality. Behold, I will cast her upon a bed of sickness, and those who commit adultery with her into great tribulation, unless they repent of her deeds. And I will kill her children with pestilence; and all the churches will know that I am He who searches the minds and hearts; and I will give to each one of you according to your deeds." (Revelation 2:21-23)
A lot of people get mad at the thought of God releasing judgment on pour innocent little children. However, in the middle of giving the Ten Commandments, God clearly warns us that
He will allow the curse of the parent's sin to come on their children to the third and fourth generation of those who break His Commandments (Exodus 20:5). In other words, Katrina type curses/judgments that affect innocent children are not God’s fault. The fault goes directly back to the disobedient
and unrepentant parents.
If we can grasp the potency of the spiritual dynamics at work here (dynamics that have destroyed countless lives in the ashes of sin) then we have not only answered the question of "Why New Orleans?", but we have also laid the foundation for why God used Hurricane Katrina.
Why Katrina?
A big part of why a hurricane named "Katrina" was used to release this particular judgment is found within Katrina’s name itself. Katrina is a derivative of the name "Katherine", of which the surface translation means “pure”. However, a number of etymologists point out that, in Greek, “Katherine/Katrina” comes
from the name Αικατερινη (Aikaterine) which comes
from the earlier Greek name ‘εκατερος (hekateros).25
When this etymology is carried into Greek mythology, “Katherine/Katrina” appears to come
from ‘Εκατη (Hekate), which is also the name of a pagan goddess who is "associated with witchcraft, tombs, demons and the underworld."26 In its description of Hecate, the Encyclopedia Britannica says:
"Hecate was the goddess presiding over magic and spells (occasionally she is referred to as the mother of the enchantress Circe27)… On moonlit nights, Hecate was seen at crossroads, accompanied by ghosts and hell-bounds."28
Similarly, the cornerstone of the darker forms of Voodoo lies in black magic (sorcery), fortune telling, the casting of spells, and calling up the dead, which is expressly forbidden by God:
"There shall not be found among you anyone… who uses divination, one who practices witchcraft, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer, or one who casts a spell, or a medium, or a spiritist, or one who calls up the dead. For whoever does these things is detestable to the LORD…" (Deuteronomy. 18:10-12)
Calling up the dead (necromancy) is especially big in Voodoo. In his book, Secrets of Voodoo, Voodoo cultist Milo Rigaud explains how the simbi/loas help the invisible departed souls (ghosts) crossover and commune with the living.
"It is the voodoo Mercury (spirit/medium) who conducts the soul from the visible to the invisibles, starting
from the crossroads, and who then leads the invisibles to the crossroads, to receive the sacrifice."29
Notice how everything centers around the crossroads. Consequently, the backdrop for the practice of Voodoo is normally set at the crossroads of a cemetery full of tombs, skeletons, and ghostly images that are constantly crossing over between the living and the dead. One Voodoo group even calls itself New Orleans Voodoo Crossroads30, which is an obvious tie-in to the goddess "Hecate/Katrina" at the "crossroads, accompanied by ghosts and hell-bounds."31
In Mexico, it is said that "La Catrina" signifies death because she comes to lead those who have died to crossover to the netherworld. Thus, whenever someone dies it is common to hear people say, "vino por él Catrine" which means "La Catrina came for him." Pasadas was a famous Mexican drawer of the early 20th century, who created a skeletal character (left) to personify La Catrina.
Today, this character is used when observing "El Dia del Muerte", the "Day
of the Dead"32 which comes from the pagan feast of "Samhain" and is celebrated around Halloween. |
Applying this etymological insight to the lawlessness of New Orleans makes is clear why God used a hurricane named Katrina to judge New Orleans. God simply used the same basic pattern of judgment that He used against Egypt when He delivered Israel
from slavery. In the Egyptian model, He turned the false gods of Egypt against the people of Egypt, thereby displaying His power and authority over them. As a result, the curse of Egypt’s sin came back on them in a curse/judgment that not only affected much of the country, but ultimately killed Pharaoh and all the first born in Egypt.
In the same manner, Yahweh turned the water spirits of "Hecate/Katrina" against New Orleans that came in the form of a hurricane/judgment with the same name. Because they drew power
from the waters to energize their Voodoo and occult practices, God judged their sin with their sin by sending them more Simbi Andezo (fresh water and salt water) than they could handle.
This model of judgment is also directly connected to how God uses heaven and earth to witness against us when we transgress His Commandments:
"When you become the father of children and children's children and have remained long in the land, and act corruptly, and make an idol in the form of anything, and do that which is evil in the sight of the LORD your God so as to provoke Him to anger, I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that you shall surely perish quickly
from the land…" (Deuteronomy. 4:25-26)
Because it takes at least two witnesses to confirm the guilt of a law breaker and pass judgment on him (Deuteronomy. 19:3; 2 Corinthians
13:1), God will use natural disasters like hurricanes and tornadoes from heaven as well as earthquakes and volcanoes
from the earth to serve as witnesses against our rebellion.
Why August 29, 2005
Many would say that New Orleans has been steeped in Voodoo and pagan worship for over two centuries without God doing anything about it. So, why did He choose to send the curse/judgment of Katrina on August 29, 2005?
The timing of August 29th ties into the pagan celebration of "Hecate/Katrina". Both the Greeks and the
Romans had festivals dedicated to her worship. In Rome, Hecate’s sacred day was on the 29th of each month33 which is huge considering the fact that Katrina hit New Orleans on August 29th
at 7:00 AM EDT.
The timing of the year 2005 is also clear. The first reason is that the World Meteorological Organization determines the names used to identify hurricanes well in advance. As you can see on the chart below, Katrina was predetermined to fall right in the middle of the year 2005.

Considering everything that we have learned up to this point, Katrina’s timing goes way beyond coincidence. It was a specific hurricane with a specific predetermined name that brought a specific judgment on a specific city for specific sins on a specific date. There was even a specific national transgression committed by the U.S. that actually released Katrina at a moment in time that would cause it to hit New Orleans on August 29, 2005.
The Forced Evacuation of Jewish Settlers from the Gaza Strip is the second and most weighty reason why Katrina came when it did. Gaza is clearly part of the Promised Land of Canaan (Genesis 10:19) that Yahweh began restoring to Israel in 1948 (Isaiah 11:10-11). Scripture is clear that anyone or any nation attempting to thwart God’s covenant regarding the Promised Land is guilty of cursing Israel with a curse that will come back on them as judgment (Genesis 12:1-3).
Although, America has been a blessing to Israel in many ways, U.S. pressure on Israel to give up the Gaza Strip qualifies as bringing a curse against Israel. Consequently, America’s role in the "Roadmap to Peace" pullout of the Gaza settlements was the event that starting the clock ticking on Katrina.
Katrina’s Timeline started on August 23rd, when the last Jewish settlers where forcibly removed
from the Gaza Strip. Oddly enough, August 23rd was also the day that the National Hurricane Center announced: "Data
from an Air Force reserve unit reconnaissance aircraft... indicate the broad low pressure area over the southeastern Bahamas has become organized enough to be classified as tropical depression twelve."34
Two days later, tropical depression twelve (the number of the sons of Israel) was upgraded to "Hurricane Katrina" that unleashed a curse on America equivalent to the curse she helped bring on Israel in the Gaza pullout. There are seven major similarities between Gaza and New Orleans listed below and they are staggering.
Gaza |
New Orleans |
-
Approximately 8,500 Jewish settlers representing .13%
of Israel’s population were forced to evacuate the Gaza Strip.35
|
-
Approximately 450,000 U.S. Citizens representing .15 %
of American’s population were forced to evacuate New Orleans.36
|
-
Jewish settlers were sent to temporary camps throughout Israel.
|
-
New Orleans residents were sent to temporary shelters
throughout America.
|
-
Some Jewish settlers took refuge on rooftops where
they fought against the forced evacuation
|
-
Some New Orleans citizens took refuge on rooftops to
escape the flood waters and to fight against forced evacuation.
|
-
Jewish tombs had to be dismantled and
gravesites had to be dug up and reburied in other cemeteries somewhere
else.
|
-
Flood waters dismantled tombs and (dug up)
gravesites releasing corpses to float around the city and will have to
be reburied somewhere else.
|
-
Israeli citizens were banned from returning to their
homes in the Gaza.
|
-
U.S. citizens were banned from returning to their
homes along the affected areas of the Gulf Coast.
|
-
Gaza homes and business were destroyed and plowed
under by government bulldozers.
|
-
Gulf Coast homes and businesses were destroyed and
will be plowed under by government bulldozers.
|
-
Reports say that the Gush Katif settlement is going to
be replaced with a group of casinos that would draw tourists to the area
and help the economy.
|
-
Katrina destroyed casinos and casino boats throughout
New Orleans and the Gulf Coast that will shun tourists and hurt the
economy.

The old saying, "As Israel goes, so goes the world" is especially true for America, because of its strong ties to the nation, the people, and the God of Israel. Consequently, we have clearly entered a time when God is openly judging America’s sin. Specifically, He is dealing with apostate Judeo-Christian America by releasing its sin back on her in much the same way He did on apostate Israel when they left Him to worship the Baals:
"Your ways and your deeds have brought these things to you. This is your evil. How bitter! How it has touched your heart!" (Jeremiah 4:18 NAS)
Consequently, if America continues to support the "Roadmap for Peace", there will be more and greater destruction sent upon her land like the birth pains of a woman is labor. (Even now as I write, another Hurricane named Rita is slamming Galveston, Texas, where "dramatic fires in the Strand District" have broken out. Interestingly enough, the Strand District is where Galveston holds its "massive Mardi Gras celebration."37
Rita has also reopened the levies in New Orleans and flooded parts of the city again):
"For when they shall say, peace and safety; then sudden destruction comes upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape" (1
Thessalonians 5:3 KJV).
Birth Pains of the Last Days
Most believers understand that the increasing intensity of natural disasters are part of the birth pains of the last days, which takes us back to man’s fall in the Garden. Remember that there were no natural disasters prior to Adam’s sin. His act of disobedience caused the entire creation to suffer corruption, which is what released natural disasters in the earth in the first place. These eruptions of nature are the groanings of the creation that is crying out for the sons of God to turn back to Yahweh, so that it can be set free
from the corruption that was forced upon it through Adam’s sin:
"For the anxious longing of the creation waits eagerly for the revealing of the sons of God. For the creation was subjected to futility, not of its own will, but because of Him who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself also will be set free
from its slavery to corruption into the freedom of the glory of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation groans and suffers the pains of childbirth together until now." (Romans 8:19-22)
In other words, as we approach the end of the age, man’s wickedness and the resulting judgments will grow in frequency and intensity just like the "birth pains of a woman in labor" (Matthew 24:8). Scripture teaches that man’s lawlessness will increase
from bad to worse38 until the man of lawlessness is released onto the scene. However, there is a righteous remnant that will return with Messiah Jesus when He brings the final judgment on the unrepentant and births His millennial reign upon the earth. (2
Thessalonians 2:3-8).
Simply put, these are the final days in the battle between the "mystery of godliness" and the "mystery of lawlessness". This battle ultimately reveals what is written on each man’s heart. If he has followed the New Covenant model of getting God’s Torah written on his heart39, he will walk in behavioral righteousness and receive a reward. But if his heart is lawless – i.e. it does not have God’s Law/Torah written on it – then he will walk unrighteously and suffer judgment "on the day when, according to my gospel, God will judge the secrets of men through Christ Jesus" (Romans 2:16).
Examine Your Ways
The Christian community has responded admirably with aid and comfort to the victims of Katrina, which is what we are called to do regardless of why it happened. However, as servants and messengers of God’s covenant, we also have a mandate to expose the sin that brought this judgment in the first place and call Judeo-Christian America to repentance:
"Cry loudly, do not hold back; raise your voice like a trumpet, and declare to My people their transgression, and to the house of Jacob their sins." (Isaiah 58:1)
This is something that the "politically correct", "seeker sensitive", "post modern" church will not do, primarily because a large part of the church has failed to repent
from its own sin. Yes, we have washed our spiritual robes with the blood of Jesus, but we have failed to wash our wedding garments by turning away
from our lawless deeds. In other words, we are born again by the Spirit of God, but we have not examined our ways in the light of God’s Torah (Proverbs 6:23) so as to turn
from our sins:
"Let us examine and probe our ways, and let us return to the LORD." (Lamentations 3:40)
There are many things that God’s people need to repent from, but there is one primary transgression that feeds them all. It is the theology which teaches that God’s Law/Torah passed away when Jesus died on the cross and is not valid for today. Jesus referred to the nullification of His Torah as "destroying the Law" and said that those who do this are "least in the kingdom of Heaven" (Matthew 5:17-19). When God’s Law/Torah is cast out of our lives, we very quickly end up walking in sin which is the transgression of the Law/Torah (1
John 3:4). Consequently, without the light of God’s Law to guide us, we end up eating at Jezebel’s table without realizing it (Revelation 2:20). This is a big issue with God that the church is largely unaware of.
In the church, Jezebel’s table is primarily expressed through the celebration feasts of Baal and Asherah. Baal worship was largely a feast to the ancient Babylonian sun god Nimrod, which is hidden within today’s Christmas celebration, while Asherah worship was a feast to the Babylonian fertility goddess Ishtar, which is hidden within today’s Lent & Easter observances. Unfortunately, most Christians do not realize the negative impact that these celebrations have on them and their families.
This is one reason why the church has not had much influence on the French Quarter of New Orleans. It is very difficult to preach against Jezebel’s table of Voodoo and Mardi Gras when we are eating at Jezebel’s table of Baal and Asherah on the other side of the room. In many cases, all we are really doing is asking them to leave their table of demons in order to come over and eat at our table of demons.
Consequently, the church must come back and embrace God’s Torah, because it is the only place in Scripture that instructs us how to separate the pagan feasts of Jezebel’s table
from the holy feasts of the Lord’s Table (Deuteronomy. 12:1-4, 30-31). Jezebel’s table celebrates "the deep things of Satan" (Revelation 2:24), where as the Lord’s table celebrates the deep things of God. Jezebel’s feasts glorify the work of the devil, while God’s feasts glorify His work of redemption in Messiah Jesus.
Yahweh’s entire plan of redemption is memorialized and celebrated in His appointed feasts (Leviticus 23). The
Spring Feasts are celebrations of Messiah’s first coming. Passover and Unleavened Bread are about His sinless life and death on the cross. First Fruits is about His resurrection as the "first fruits
from among the dead", and Pentecost is about the giving of the Ten Commandments and the Baptism of the Holy Spirit.
On the other hand, the
Fall Feasts are prophetic celebrations that point to Messiah’s second coming. The Feasts of Trumpets is about
the "Season of Repentance" followed by God's final judgment. Yom Kippur is about the Day of His coming, and Tabernacles is about the Marriage Supper of the Lamb. As a result, The LORD’S feasts help us to examine our ways and return to His ways. They also help us recognize prophetic events like Katrina, so that we can know the times and the seasons of the LORD.
The Season of Repentance
In the wake of New Orleans’ judgment, we find ourselves in the "Season of Teshuvah" or the "Season of Repentance" which began on the 1st of Elul (Sept. 5th), and flows into the Feasts of Trumpets which begins on the 1st of Tishri (Oct. 4th). The Feasts of Trumpets is known as "the day of the awakening blast" that wakes us
from our slumber and calls us into a time of self examination and repentance before the final judgment comes. Jesus explains it to the church as follows:
"Wake up, and strengthen the things that remain, which were about to die; for I have not found your deeds completed in the sight of My God. Remember therefore what you have received and heard; and keep it, and repent. If therefore you will not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what hour I will come upon you." (Revelation 3:2-4)
In this reference to the Feast of Trumpets, Jesus commands us to wake up and repent, or He threatens to come as a thief (in the night). Pre-tribulation Greco-Roman Christianity teaches that the thief in the night is when Jesus comes to rapture the church. However, a
study of the Fall Feasts reveals that the thief comes at the Battle of Armageddon and brings judgment on everyone who would not wake up and repent (Revelation 16:15).
Therefore, it must be understood that the close proximity of New Orleans’ judgment to the Feast of Trumpets is the final piece to the "Mystery of Katrina". Visa vie, Yahweh used Hurricane Katrina as a disciplinary and corrective judgment just prior to the "Season of Repentance" as a prophetic sign that He is calling His people to repent of their sins and return to Him.
A Formal Call To Repentance
This particular call to repentance is the strongest one I have ever heard
from the LORD. It is also the most specific word regarding how He wants us to return,
which tells me that the forerunner anointing
of Elijah rests strongly upon it. There are eight specific things I believe the LORD wanted to address in this particular call to repentance. I believe that these things are absolutely imperative for anyone who hopes to escape the great apostasy that has already penetrated deep into the church.
1. God is saying that, in His great love for us, our sin will no longer be tolerated and that we are to wake up and repent of our transgressions against His Torah. If not, our sins will be visited back upon us and our children as disciplinary judgments designed to bring repentance:
"For those whom the Lord loves He disciplines, and He scourges every son whom He receives." (Hebrews 12:6)
"But when we are judged, we are disciplined by the Lord in order that we may not be condemned along with the world." (1 Corinthians 11:32)
2. The LORD is also telling us to grow up and stop blaming the devil for all our problems when it is mostly our transgressions of His Law/Torah that has opened the door for the enemy to attack us:
"Like an eagle the enemy comes against the house of the LORD, because they have transgressed My covenant, and rebelled against My Law [Torah]." (Hosea 8:1)
3. Yahweh is saying that His people do not know His ways because they do not know His Torah. He is
telling us to stop playing games with His word and to start studying the whole Word
from the perspective and context in which it was written, so that we do not end up naked and ashamed when the thief comes on the Day of Judgment.
"Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth." (2
Timothy 2:15 KJV)
4. To accomplish this, God is calling us back to the New Covenant model (Jeremiah 31:31-33;
Hebrews10:16) of writing His Law/Torah on our minds and our hearts:
"I delight to do Thy will, O my God; Thy Law is within my heart." (Psalms 40:8)
"I shall run the way of Thy commandments, for Thou wilt enlarge my heart." (Psalms119:32)
"My son, forget not my Law; but let thine heart keep My commandments" (Proverbs 3:1 KJV)
5. God is telling us to abandon the feasts of Jezebel and return to the Feasts of the Lord:
"These are the appointed times (feasts) of the LORD, holy convocations which you shall proclaim at the times appointed for them." (Leviticus 23:4)
- Sabbath
- Passover
- Unleavened Bread
- First Fruits
- Pentecost (Shavuot)
- Trumpets (Rosh Hashanah)
- Yom Kippur
- Tabernacles (Sukkot)
6. The LORD is telling church leaders to stop manipulating and misquoting His Word in order to substantiate their continuous solicitations for a "seed faith offering". Tithes and offerings are a part of God’s prosperity model, but we can not sow our offerings while sitting at Jezebel’s table and expect God to prosper us. They must return to God’s commandments as the true multiplier of wealth and prosperity:
"All the commandments that I am commanding you today you shall be careful to do, that you may live and multiply, and go in and possess the land which the LORD swore to give to your forefathers." (Deuteronomy. 8:1)
"Now it shall be, if you will diligently obey the LORD your God, being careful to do all His commandments which I command you today, the LORD your God will set you high above all the nations of the earth. And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you, if you will obey the LORD your God." (Deuteronomy. 28:1-2)
"Obey the laws of God and follow all his ways; keep each of his commands written in the Law of Moses so that you will prosper in everything you do, wherever you turn." (1 Kings 2:3-4 TLB)
7. The LORD is telling us to stop putting prayer out there as a magical formula to end all our problems. Christian leaders are calling the church to pray that God would "heal our land" by quoting a partial Scripture
from 2 Chronicles 7:14 which takes it out of context. Their emphasis is on prayer rather than judgment and repentance
from sin, which is what the scripture is primarily about:
"If I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or if I command the locust to devour the land, or if I send pestilence [or any other corrective judgments] among My people, and My people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray, and seek My face and turn
from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin, and will heal their land." (2
Chronicles 7:13-14)
8. Yahweh wants to heal and cleanse our land, but a hocus pocus "prayer" followed by a perverted "seed faith offering" is not going to do it. God is not going
to restore us until we turn from our wicked ways and wash our actions with the water of His Word:
"Wash yourselves, make yourselves clean; remove the evil of your deeds
from My sight." (Isaiah 1:16; see also 2 Corinthians 7:1)
As we "turn from our wicked ways" and walk in (behavioral) righteousness40, we wash our wedding garments and make ourselves ready for the Day of His Coming and the Marriage Supper of the Lamb (Revelation 19:7-8). This is why the message of the prophets throughout Scripture has always been to repent and return to His Torah. It’s because they understood that when we make ourselves ready as His Bride, He promises to return and receive us unto Himself.
"Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her; that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, that He might present to Himself the church in all her glory, having no spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that she should be holy and blameless." (Ephesians 5:25-27)
"Repent therefore and return, that your sins may be wiped away, in order that times of refreshing may come
from the presence of the Lord; and that He may send Jesus, the Christ appointed for you, whom heaven must receive until the period of restoration of all things about which God spoke by the mouth of His holy prophets
from ancient time." (Acts 3:19-21)
The LORD says, "Return to me and I will return to you"

a Category 5 hurricane is called the "Hand of God". This first started with
